Isn’t it ironic that billions of people on this planet put in such an honest effort to be unique; a true individual. When in reality, we’re all choosing what we consider to be ”unique” by sorting through a set of predetermined options provided to us by corporations. It’s called Mass customization. Not so unique any more now are we?
Mass customization is something the corporate big-wigs concocted in order to suppress the real individual in order to have more consumer control and social order. With that being said, it occurred to me that, that particular line of thinking is similar to that of the classic novel I’m sure many were forced to read at some point during their academic career; A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
“Joy and happiness were inevitably sacrificed for the pursuit of goods and profit.” -Herber Marcuse.
This sounded similar to something Mustapha Mond would attempt to explain to John the Savage in order to justify the means of using extreme procedures to condition the human psyche. That’s when I got to thinking….We live in a world where the idea that individuality is achieved through conformity is truly beleived, despite its overwhelming credibility of being the most absurd oxymoron I ever heard.
We are in fact, living in the Brave New World Huxley was warning us about, only slightly modified. The media hasn’t gone so far as to condition every human from birth ( at least that we know of) but, the overall population is pushed to consume as much as possible, while being told what you’re desire to buy this products is unique and that this particular product is tailored to meet your unique needs and wants. Now, this is all a type marketing deception we’re spoon fed from since our pre-adolescent years, so its no surprise that you believe that the high-heeled, deep purple suede boots in the shoe store display window were made especially for you…and you….and you. Open your eyes to the capitalist system in its prime people! They’ve annihilated the idea, perhaps even the prospect of being an individual because they have markets built just for you and the millions with the exact same taste. And we’ve grown to willingly open our mouths, accept the spoonful of deception and swallow it in a blissful state of ignorance, like good little boys and girls just like the corporations wanted.
If the World State’s motto in Brave New world is Community. Identity. Stability. Ours is more like Homogeneity. Ignorance. Consumption.
