Where do I begin my critique on this overrated fashion item.
According to the UGGs official website www.uggsaustralia.com the idea originated from an Australian who moved to California and became a surfer around 1978. The boots were designed to keep the feet of surfers warm, after spending a prolonged period of time in the cold sea. They would simply slip on the boots and their toes would be toasty in no time!
But in recent years its gained popularity among celebrities and every day people, and its sky-rocketed into the must have item year after year. We first started seeing these boots a few years ago, on the feet of A-List celebrities like Kate Hudson,Jennifer Aniston & Eva Longoria and even on has been celebrities like Pamela Anderson, and Nicole Richie.
Ever since then when you would walk down the street you can see just about every female wearing the tan suede sheepskin clunkers with a skirt and tank top in 20 degree weather. Heck! they’ll even wear them in the winter with snow up to their ankles!
So, what’s the big hoopla about them? They don’t seem conventional in the summer, nor do they seem conventional in the winter. The only season that might actually seem fitting to wear them in is fall, because it gets chilly.
I know a few people ( who will of course remain nameless) who have to wear plastic bags over their feet before they put on those boots in the winter, so that their feet don’t get soaked by the end of the day.
Now, it’s just a thought, but I could have sworn the reason for a boots existence is to keep your feet dry…not get them wet…
I’d also like to point out that UGGs do make boots for “outdoor wear” they aren’t the same style as the ever so popular Classic Ugg, but they do serve their respective purpose.

But despite its unconventional nature of the Classic Ugg females still parade around in the boots, because “they’re cool” and can sometimes “make an outfit” But in reality, they saw Eva Longoria in a pair on Us Weekly and decided they HAD to have them, regardless of the price.
The price! The original UGG boots can cost someone up to $160 US which comes up to about $197 Canadian+ tax people! Of course you could always get the knock offs for about $60-80, but I still think its overpriced for boots that don’t do much except make it look like you’re wearing a mitten on your feet.
It is evident that the desires to have these boots are driven by the market force’s ideology of consumption. The boots don’t even serve their original intended purpose, but are still purchased by those who do not surf. But Why?
The answer to that question is simple: because of the unofficial celebrity endorsements and advertisements in tabloid magazines, because we are brainwashed by the media and advertising to want items no matter what their purpose or price, it is no surprise that the average female finds herself wanting a pair of these boots. Now, they have become a status symbol within the fashion society they are apart of.
Therefore, unless you surf and your feet get cold while doing so, you should not be wearing UGG boots, I don’t care how cool they are. If they don’t keep your feet warm and dry all the time regardless of weather conditions, what’s the point? And one should not be compelled to buy a product just because a certain celebrity is sporting them around hollywood.
Set your own trends, be your own person, and don’t give in to conformity.
